Early detection of diabetic foot ulcers
Siren offers specialized care management services for people living with diabetes, neuropathy and other chronic conditions. Neuropathy is the most common and costly complication of diabetes. Neuropathy, or nerve damage, causes loss of protective sensation in the lower limbs. When somebody has a small injury, it can go unnoticed, become an ulcer, gangrene, and ultimately result in an amputation. Over 100,000 legs are lost to diabetes each year in the US alone.
Combined with a care team specialized in neuropathy and early detection, Siren Socks measure foot temperature to help find potential injuries early. A temperature increase on specific spots of the foot can indicate inflammation, an early warning signal of a potential ulcer or other foot complication. When a so-called hotspot is detected, the nurse reaches out to the patient. Often the inflammation can be reversed by reducing activity and checking the feet to make sure there is no damage. If the problem persists, the nurse alerts the supervising physician, who will decide if they want to see the patient in-person.
